Activities
NEW Activity - Badminton
We have started playing badminton at the Acorn Centre every Tuesday afternoon between 3-4pm. Anybody is welcome to join in this activity and badminton is a great way to keep fit and a fairly easy sport to have a go at.
Football
We have also introduced a weekly football session in partnership with The National Offender Management Service (probation). This takes place every Wednesday afternoon at the Acorn Centre between 3 and 4 pm.
Literacy Training
A new basic skills English course has been launched by Dave Sagar. Dave has completed City&Guilds training units himself and says that he feels it is great for our service users to be able to achieve an educational certificate. The new course is a basic starter course to encourage people to take part, those who do well can move on to further training.
Dave has been able to purchase laptop equipment for this course with funding from the Trusthouse Charitable Foundation, with our thanks.

Drama / Art

From Shakespeare to shell hunting, the bowling alley to Buckfast Abbey, watercolour to windsurfing, photography to geography, arts and crafts to canoes and rafts! My role here at the Project mirrors the diversity of our service users and their needs. Engaging in one of our activities not only provides relief from the challenges faced on a daily basis but also nurtures a sense of belonging, friendship and achievement. It is often the first step towards moving back into conventional society. Their participation gently introduces them to all the skills required to make this transition a success.
If there is one way I feel we could improve on this already superb service, it would be to provide more external opportunities. I have personally witnessed the life changing benefits of a day trip out, of educational visits and of extended fellowship days. We have been able to purchase a 7-seater landrover at a low price and are currently applying for funding to enable us to do more trips out.

Drama and activities co-ordinator
Nikki Samuel-Stevens, our experienced dramatist and local actress, works at the project part time. She facilitates group activities such as dance, drama, games, art and crafts as well as outings. These offer opportunities for creative expression as well as relaxation, enjoyment and social interaction.

Quizzes are very popular and are hosted by Kerriann, a former service user.

Games such as trivial pursuit are sometimes played, with some strong competition between teams!
Photography

"Photography is a way in. It enables a communication with others, it shows a different life that someone can experience. It promotes change and confidence.
Last year we held our first photography exhibition and opened to the public to proudly display all the hard work. We are currently looking at the possibility of selling framed images to help raise funds – some of the service users work has been outstanding.
The best thing is all the involvement of the boys and girls at the Project and our walls have become like a giant family album. There is a great buzz when someone is happy to send photos home to mum or you watch someone completely engrossed in the task of getting the right shot."
Dougie Worthington, Deputy Manager
Dougie facilitates our photography project. This has included training in Photoshop software, provided by a visiting professional digital artist, as well as regular opportunities to experiment top quality equipment. (We have one Nikon D80 and four Fujifilm S9 500s, we have also had a few compact cameras donated, which have been handy for lending to some of our keen photographers).
As part of the photography project we also focus on self-esteem, offering opportunities for make overs, hairdressing and encouragement with personal hygiene. (See "Photo Gallery" for more pictures and examples of photos)
Pool
Pool is an activity that we have recently reintroduced. It has been extremely popular in the past and useful for encouraging people to learn how to deal with competition, whether winning or losing. It is also a great opportunity to socialise in a relaxed environment and get to know people, as well as to enjoy yourself.
The project has group membership of Rileys Pool club for these sessions.
Football
A 6-aside team recently played at a tournament in Plymouth.
Unfortunately we lost....badly
A definate case of no practice, combined with unfitness...led to 9-1 and 6-0 defeats. All the guys enjoyed the day however and we will be returning next year...
We are trying to organise a regular football practise so we can get fitter, better and encourage more people to get involved.
Outings
Outings are usually popular and include a variety of activities such as walks on Dartmoor, picnics, visits to see birds of prey (courtesy of 'Hedges Hawkes'), animals, and areas of natural beauty.
Please see 'Trips' for more information on recent outings.
